Making Waves in Bangkok: Our Story
Perfect waves in Uluwatu, Bali! (by Steven Wilcox @stevenewilcox)
Ever dream of perfect waves without a plane ticket? That's exactly how our journey to build Bangkok's first surf park began! Stuck in Singapore during COVID, and not being able to fly to Indonesia to find good waves, we realized there was an opportunity to bring that ocean magic to us.
We dove deep into the world of wave tech, checking out cool systems like Surf Loch, American Wave Machine, and even Kelly Slater Wave Co. But then, we spotted some epic waves on Instagram from URBNSURF in Melbourne, and a direct chat with them led us straight to the amazing folks at Wavegarden. Once travel opened up, we had to see it for ourselves! Meeting the team and one co-founder in the Basque Country, and actually riding their waves was incredible! They were super excited about doing a project in Thailand.
From that moment, it's been full steam ahead. We've been busy finding the ideal, sizable chunk of land, teaming up with top-notch geotechnical experts and architects, and designing the lagoon with the fantastic Wavegarden crew.
Why Wavegarden? Their vision just clicks with ours. They're constantly pushing boundaries – their machines are 40% more energy-efficient now from the first time we met, their water treatment tech is seriously next-level, not mentioning the improvements in the different wave shapes that occured over the last years. But what truly hooks us is their dedication to making the sport of surfing completely accessible to everyone – whether you're a total newbie or a seasoned pro chasing barrels. That universal stoke, the pure joy of catching a perfect ride, that's what we're bringing to Bangkok!
